About

The New York Times seeks an art director to join our award-winning features print design team in the NYC office.

The features design team is responsible for the majority of the paper’s weekly sections, including Arts & Leisure, Sunday Business, Styles, Book Review and Food. This art director will work closely with leadership on projects, ranging from interior spreads to the team’s most ambitious work, including occasional special sections and redesigns.

We are looking for an art director with a demonstrated talent for narrative visual storytelling, able to conceptualize creative solutions and see them through to publication. The successful candidate will possess superior typography skills, a strong eye for illustration and photography, and a proven ability to organize complex information to create engaging designs. This art director will have strong project management skills and the ability to take the lead on projects, while working collaboratively with other designers, editors and photo editors. They should be passionate about print — interested in generating visual-first story ideas as well as finding innovative ways to present digital-first content in the newspaper. Ultimately, the successful candidate will be a team player, able to bring their talent and enthusiasm to projects big and small.

Requirements:

- Must have a minimum of 5-6 years of design experience, including experience redesigning publications and/or building design systems
- A portfolio that demonstrates superior typography and layout skills, whether through magazine work, innovative newspaper design or book design
- Strong oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to sell ideas and build consensus
- Excellent collaboration skills for working with fellow designers, editors, photo editors and other staff
- Experience managing projects and meeting deadlines
- Demonstrated talent with illustration, with a passion for growing a network of diverse artists
- Comfortable working under pressure and able to adapt to changing priorities
- Experience with digital design is a plus
- Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail
- Knowledge of Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
